FEATURE: A CALL TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS ON PLASTIC POLLUTION | EMECHO TED

Have you  ever thought  about  how  your choices  affect  the earth’s  wellbeing  and how you  can  minimize the impact  you  make on  the environment?
How about  your health  and  that  of your children?
How about  the  quality  of your life and  that  of other citizens  around  the world?
How about  the air you  breathe every  second  and  the water you  drink  often?
The wellbeing of our environment  has  being a  burning  topic  of  discussion  and  debate  all  around  the  world. Yet, it seems  that the more discussions  and  awareness are made/carried out, the more our environment  gets  polluted.

World environment day 2018, pressing environmental concerns, beating plastic pollution, theme of 2018 world environment day, United Nations call 2018, positive impact on environment, plastic pollution, solving environmental problems, Ted Emecho, abuja based environmentalists, abujagirlsjournal, Shuga articles, Ukachi Cynthia ezinne's personal blog, abuja blogger 2018, top abuja blogs, most popular abuja blogger, growing threat of environmental degradation, immediate and long term implications of plastic pollution

But,  why  does  it  matter to  us? What  has  happened  over the years  that  has triggered  us  to  think  about  it? Could  it  be  our unforgivable,  inexplicable,  actions?
So  I  ask  myself,  as  I  want  you  to  ask  yourself too: What  are  we not  doing  right?

WHAT OTHERS ARE READING: Reflection | Unappreciation
The growing  threat  of  environmental  degradation  is a call for everyone to reassess their daily  choices. Each  World  Environment  Day  is  organized  around  a  theme that  focuses  attention on  a  particularly  pressing  environmental  concern
Once again, The  United  Nations  calls  for actions  globally  on  World  Environment  Day. The theme for  2018  (5th June) is: Beating  Plastic  Pollution  and  will be hosted  in India. Well  done  to  the  United  Nations!
But, Why must  it  always  be a United  Nations  call? Why can’t  we call  ourselves  and  do  what  is  right?
World  Environment  Day  is  a  day  for everyone, everywhere.   It  is  a  day,  yet  it  must  be every  day. It  is  a  day  set  aside for action from all and sundry  to  do something  for the environment  so  that  their  collective efforts  can  have  positive impact  on  the environment.
I ask  you  again, what   have you  done as   an individual,  group,  community,  government  etc?
It  should  not  always  be about  the failures  of our  government  when  it  comes  to solving  environmental  problems.   Because, When  you  think about  your contributions  in  degrading  the environment,  you would  realize your responsibility  in  solving  it. What many of us do is  drop  one sachet water, biscuits or candy wrapper,  dump  one  used  plastic  can on the floor and so on. We simply  do  not  see  the  immediate and  long-term  implications  of these our  seemingly harmless  actions.

Plastic pollution  is  now  an ever-present  challenge.   Plastics are seen  indiscriminately  dumped  on  our  streets,  floating  in  our rivers, ocean  and  lagoons,  littering  our  landscapes  and  affecting  our general health. We have all  contributed  to  this  problem  knowingly  and  unknowingly.

What  right  do  we have to  admire the  neatness  and  beauty  of cities  like London  and  Rome when  we degrade our  own?

Our natural  environment  becomes  unbalanced  and  unsustainable when  it  is polluted.   It  affects  everyone, as it  is  complexly  connected.   Our lives  are  at  stake,  we just  don’t  know  yet.

DID YOU READ THIS?: RESPECT IS NOT ALWAYS EARNED

I  encourage  everyone  (old  and  young) to  join  in  this  wonderful  call. We could  support  by  participating  in  public readings,  open  mics,  street  walks, social  media campaigns  and  other 21st  century  approaches  that  seek  to  promote  the environment.
We should  also  be reminded  that  the efforts  to  solving  environmental  problems  are beyond  chats,  tweets,  talks,  holding  conferences,  signing  agreements  and  doing one particular  thing  annually.
We  must  strive to  become  more environmentally  conscious;  we must  put into practice everything  we say  conventionally  and  unconventionally,  gradually,  till  it becomes  a  habit. This  will  be realistic  if we begin  in  commitment  with  ourselves.
