In all sincerity, being motivated to do anything is very easy. What most of us really need help with is how to stay motivated at work. You know, sustaining that energy with which you started the work, project or anything else that you’re trying to do. Often times than not, we get carried away with our emotions, people’s attitudes towards us or the routine of the job being done. This affects both our attitude towards the job, our proficiency and even lowers our level of productivity.
I won’t even lie: As a 9-5er, there have been times when I’ll just close my laptop and stand in front a glass window asking myself if ‘Na me kill Jesus?’… Lol or scolding myself for growing up so quick that I now have to work for my own money, to pay my bills and take care of myself (sighs). I’m sure you can relate to this too.
I’ve also tried screaming ontop my voice that adulthood is a scam that no one really prepared us for, thinking I’d wake up from a deep sleep to find that cute 5-yrs old me but that only made reality stick harder. Urgh!
Since we can’t stop ourselves from growing, it then means that we have to consciously learn how to stay strong at this thing called adulting. You know, especially if you have a day job or are a business owner – I’ve heard about how frustrating and depressing that can be too.
The good news is that I finally figured a way around it and I know/hope that you’d find these 8 effective tips on how to stay motivated at work helpful. Let’s get right into it:
1. Don’t Think About It As Hard Work
It can be very easy to see what you’re doing as a lot of work especially if the tasks come in bulk. It can be scary too. And as much as there might actually be a lot to do, it’s usually our own state of mind that lowers our energy and efficiency to estimation. Look at the task/s with a positive mindset rather than focus on how the quantity. It could be you just making a mountain out of a molehill. And the sooner you start it, the better for you too.
2. Think Of How Good You Will Feel To Get The Job Done
Okay…..so have you ever woken up on a Saturday morning, looked at your wardrobe and started to cry? The thought process of how to start sorting out the clothes – hanging the clean ones in, throwing the dirty ones in the laundry basket, rearranging your luggage box and probably having to do all that from the scratch! It’s just as frustrating as seeing an overflowing laundry basket or thousands of dirty dishes/pots waiting for the super woman/man….hahahahahaha (those domestic chores are my worst nightmares even as a lady… 😩).
The good thing about it is that the moment I begin to imagine the happiness and comfort that I get when everything is in order/neat gives me a certain kind of energy that cocoa cola or lucozade boost can’t give me….Lol. So just think of how happy you’ll be with the end result of the work before and how it’ll even make others appreciate you. Then….voila! You’re read to dig right into it and conquer, baby!
3. Get Your Tools Ready First
Not doing this might be a little tempting especially if you’re so desperate to get the work done and ‘move on with your life’. However, it is important to look at the task before you carefully and make a list of all you’ll need to finish it. Make sure to get all that you’ve listed down ready before digging into the task. This is because standing up at intervals to get the scissors, the staple pin, the highlighter, the palm oil or anything else that you need while working can be tiring and frustrating at the same time. But having all of them ready beside you, saves you a lot of energy and helps to increase your working speed.
4. Break Down Tasks Into Smaller Goals
Perhaps you’ve heard that popular adage that says ‘tiny drops of water make a mighty ocean’…yeah? I thought as much…..
That is exactly the wisdom you need to carry out your daily tasks at school, at work or anything else you find yourself doing per time. You don’t have to do every single one of them at the same time. Break it further down into 3 or more segments – depending on how large the workload is. Take each chunk that you’ve broken down one at a time and work on it. As soon as you’re done, move to the next bit and before you know it, your table is cleared and mission accomplished!
5. Stay Focused On The Task
It’s not easy to stay at a thing in this our generation. And it’s a huge thanks to social media (Instagram, Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc) and peer pressure – the need to catch up on the latest movie series, fashion trend, celebrity gist or even about our individual escapades. I’ll give you an example.
When I started my new job earlier this year, my boss would nag about how I couldn’t meet up a deadline or carry out a particular instruction as given. It was so frustrating for me because I thought I was already giving in my 150% best to the job and I was a fast learner. My boss knew this too, and so I thought I deserved some credit for that as well instead of the constant nagging.
One day, my boss decided to stay close and supervise me while I worked. He was barely at it for 5mins, when he ceased my smartphone and left with it while promising to bring it back at the close of work.
You can guess how vexed I was but I just continued to work and trust me, even I surprised myself that day. I completed a load of work as I had never done before. Since that day, I made it a point of duty to always put my phone on silent once I sat on my desk to work and I’m glad it’s been working for me both at work, and even when I’m creating content on my blog or YouTube channel.
This goes a long way to show that most times, we are our own ‘enemies of progress’ and not some old, charred teeth, stinking, black witch from our village. Learn to put off every form of distraction that will slow down your progress or keep you fixated at a spot.
6. Remain Positive
This one is probably going to be a reiteration of numbers one and two above. Just keep reminding yourself of why it is important that you finish that task. Imagining the good end result of what you’re doing will also keep you positive and motivated. Don’t forget that it’s all in your mind. So choose to see only the positive side to what you’re doing. Stick to those positive thoughts and you’ll be done with the tasks in no time.
7. Set deadlines for yourself
Most successful people have sworn by this tip even though I do not entirely agree with it. And it’s because I find that setting deadlines at times, put undue pressure on us and could cause more harm than good if not properly managed.
I believe that with the right mindset and motivation, you finish faster and deliver even better results than those who set deadlines. Feel free to enlighten me and other readers on this in the comment section below, if you have a knowledge of these things.
8. Set Out A Reward For Each Completed Task
Okay…this works for me most times (not every single time o). Don’t wait for someone to celebrate you for a job Weldone whenever you finish a task. Set a reward system for yourself. Celebrate yourself. Here’s what I do at times – I would promise myself that I’d take myself out on a date, buy something I’ve longed for in a while. And it’s okay to be vague with these things.
It could be a pack of your favorite yoghurt, that stunner shoe you’ve always wanted, a plate of food from your favorite restaurant, sharwama, burger, fish peppersoup…..you name it. As long as it makes you happy. Rewards make humans want to do even more than is expected from them at a particular time.
So go on and hype yourself, my darling! I’ve had this post in my draft since September and I promised myself that if I could publish it before the end of this week, I’d get myself something I’ve been craving for a while now. So guess who’s going to have one peppered sharwama and coke right away……? 😏😃😅
With these few points of mine, I hope I’ve been able to convince 😂😂 that you can stay motivated and productive at any task. Even if it’s something you don’t enjoy doing normally.
Thanks a whole lot for reading to the end and my sincere apologies for been away for a while now.
